Communication
Our goal is to teach our students to communicate effectively orally, in writing, and with a variety of digital tools, as well as develop their active listening skills. Blogging provides students with opportunities to communicate with each other, the teacher, their families, other students in AMDSB schools, students around the world, experts, and global learning partners.

How can a blog be used to amplify and improve communication skills?

Teachers:

– make teaching and learning visible
– model how to write a post, comment, and reply
– document and post observations, conversations, and products of learning
– document and post descriptive feedback (strengths and next steps)
– provide positive reinforcement of new concepts and skills
– further student inquiry by asking questions
– share links to new ideas and information
– strengthen relationships
– create digital portfolios

Students:

– make learning visible, searchable and available to others
– write in a purposeful and authentic way for a global audience
– reply to comments from family, teachers, admin, support staff, peers, students in other schools, students in other countries, global learning partners, experts . . .
– respond to descriptive feedback from family, teachers, peers. . .
– write comments to their peers, students in other schools, students from other countries, global learning partners
– improve on the quality of their conversations
– write posts about learning
– document and post the process and products of learning (screenshots, videos, apps . . .)
– document and post conversations with teachers, peers, students in other schools, students in other countries, global learning partners, experts . . .
– ask questions
– answer questions
– access links to new information, ideas and learning
– create videos, podcasts, newscasts, or slideshows
– think critically about their thinking
– reflect on learning
– observe digital citizenship rights and responsibilities
– build confidence
– strengthen relationships
– create digital portfolio to showcase growth, new learning, celebrate success
