Our Trips

In the past weeks we have had two wonderful trips….a huge thanks to all our parent volunteers! I have to say these kids are real troopers…our class was the only one in the splash pad at African Lion Safari (either crazy or tough as nails). They saw and did everything and the animals were spectacular. The weather totally cooperated for our Wildwood day. The students loved searching for creatures and it was a gorgeous day for a walk in the woods. We are lucky to have such a beautiful resource so close by.

Area and Perimeter Work

This week we did several activities related to the measurement skills of area and perimeter. Ask your child what each of those words mean! Using non standard tools such as square blocks, bread tags, centi cubes, string, etc, and standard tools such as rulers, grid paper are both ways of exploring these concepts within the measurement strand. The units of cm, m are key for them to understand and when to appropriately use them i.e., measuring smaller items you would use centimetres.

Planting the Garden

This week the children enjoyed planting a portion of the garden with Mrs. McKay. They planted onions, carrots, beans, lettuce, and sunflowers. Potatoes are still to come as we are waiting for more sprouts on them. A huge thank you to Mrs. McKay for offering to take small groups out to enjoy this hands on learning experience. (The students took some of the photos this week).

The Day Our Visitors Came!

On Monday of this week, four teachers from Little Falls spent time interacting with the grade 2/3 students while they were working on several fraction activities. The children began to grasp the meaning of linear fractions using rods, meter sticks and lines. During these activities they had to find halves and quarters on each of the items (also trying to make the connection that two fourths is the same as half and that four fourths is the same as a whole).  It was an excellent learning session for both the students and the teachers. See the pictures below.

Garden Work

Yesterday classes went out to help move topsoil into our beautiful new gardens. A huge thanks goes out once again to the parent council for this initiative. This hands on experience will tie in beautifully with the grade two/three science topics of soil, water and plants.  See our busy work below.

Snuggle Up And Read

Today we enjoyed reading Robert Munsch stories with the grade 1/2 class as well as the kindergartens. There was lots of great opportunity for the grade 2/3’s to practice their oral reading skills….using expressive voices….as well as keeping
the attention of their group;)
